One big thing that happens before a diagnosis of Alzheimer's-Dementia is the issue of driving. Many people who show or experience symptoms may not realize that they are suffering with ALZ-D and they will continue to drive as they don't want to lose that independence. It's not safe for the person driving and experiencing ALZ-D symptoms and it's not safe for the general public.
